with a non-printable white rectangle drawn over it which requires layers.

tIs it possible to turn on/off the printing of background images. ie. In
Acrobat 8 I can set a background image using the
Document >background >Add/Replace dialog and then click on Appearance

Use 1.4.8. Something will replace Graphic but it 's not yet available.
