JCOM 2004-08-24 - By Ian Vellosa
Back Hi,
I know a few people including myself who have done projects using JCom and had nothing but problems! The whole setting up of the environment appears to be very hit and miss, where I've not been able to give test and production systems the same settings and have them both work!! Even the com2java application generates different proxies depending upon which machine it is run on! As you can guess from that my personal opinion would be to avoid it where ever possible. About 2 minutes ago I got an email from a colegue who has just replpaced JCom access to excel with the POI libraries from Jakarta and is 1000 times happier with the result. However in some cases it's not possible to avoid JCom and in my project I have wrapped JCom access into a JCA which (touch wood) has been working acceptably well for the last year and a half!
With all the problems we were having the decision was almost made to write a VB wrapper around the COM application and expose this via WebServices.
So yes JCom works and does as it says on the tin, but you will find yourself stumbling through a whole load of Automation exceptions (some of which I ended up decompiling JCOM classes to find out what was going on) to get to the desired result. There is most probably an easier way round it!
