I've used Rod Johnson's "Expert One-on-One J2EE Development" profitably.  Also
see his followup, "Expert One-on-One J2EE Development without EJB", a bit
controversial as you might guess.

Johnson makes a convincing case in the first book that EJB Entity beans do not
accomplish their goals, recommending only Stateless Session beans for
synchronous EJB designs and Message-driven beans (JMS) for async.  The later
book goes on to describe how to build modern applications without EJB, using
instead Servlets, JNDI, tiered design, container-managed transactions, and the
Spring and Hibernate packages for inversion-of-control and persistence services
.  A good challenge to EJB orthodoxy.  Having built systems with these
technologies, I'd say he's onto something.
