Subject: Problems streaming PDF files 2005-01-13 - By Jean-Christian Imbeault
Back We've written an application that allows users to download pdf files through URL they receive in mails sent by the application.
There is some authentication involved so users first need to log in to our application which then saves a cookie on their browser. The cookie is then used when they click on the URL links they get in the emails.
We don't simply serve up the file though but actually read it from disk and then stream it back to the client by writing the file to the OutputStream.
The problem we have is that when a request comes in for the pdf file Internet Explorer requests the file *twice*. We have not noticed this problem with any other browser.
This is causing some severe performance problems as we the user basically needs to wait twice as long before he receives the file.
Has any one else encountered this problem? And more importantly are there any work arounds?
Thanks,
Jc
