Hi Taco,
My response was meant to be informative and helpful in regard to asking
non-J2EE related questions. If it came across as anything else, I
miscommunicated, which, as a Human Being, I'm very good at doing. ;-)

I'm surprised; JUG lists should be open to almost anything.
I can only speak for myself, but here's something I can guarantee: at
the devWorks Java Filter forum at
<
http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/forums/dw_forum.jsp?forum=177&cat=10
>
you will almost always get some sort of response and it will never be
mean-spirited. I'm the moderator there, and you can hold me to that.
Additionally, I have never seen a mean-spirited answer at
www.javaranch.com
They will, however, move an off-topic question to the appropriate forum.
It pains me to say that Sun's Java forums, while often very helpful,
have become clique-ish to some extent with a lot of sparring and sometimes
snob answers, as you put it. That is painful to me because I was the
original Duke Dollars leader for 18 months back in 1997-98 and those forums
were important to me.
I won't comment about any other responses except to say that you did get
an answer to your question here, and it appeared to me that that responder
was very willing to help. Take care, and welcome to Java.
