Linux is probably a better choice for a desktop workstation, if you want a GUI. FreeBSD is a better choice if you want a pure server. If money is no object, Solaris is very popular. And if you have lots of money and very little expertise in system administration, Windows is a good choice because it's easy to administer (even though it's not necessarily the best choice in other respects).

I went directly to FreeBSD because my hosting company used it and it had proven reliable over years of continuous operation. Also, the BSDs are all complete operating systems, not "distributions" that have no standardized content beyond a basic kernal. And the BSDs have a long and fairly direct history of UNIX behind them, even though they aren't called UNIX for legal reasons (having the right to call something UNIX costs money, for some strange reason).
