Currently I run Apache2 on FreeBSD 5.x and it runs beautifully, on a P4 with hyperthreading enabled (which FreeBSD treats as two processors). FreeBSD and Apache go together like bread and butter.
The Apache project itself runs FreeBSD.
It's true that in a commercial or mission-critical environment you might want to run a proprietary UNIX or other OS, mainly because you get better support (FreeBSD is very reliable, but you're largely on your own if it fails). But in that case many large companies choose Solaris or Windows. Nevertheless, the FreeBSD/Apache combination retains a leading position on the Net overall, because it's just as reliable and robust as the commercial stuff, and yet it's free. And if you have in-house talent to run it, it's a very viable combination even for commercial and mission-critical sites.
