If the 'line' is added to the document as a Paragraph object, I'd suggest using page events (onParagraph and onParagraphEnd) to retrieve the coordinates and based on these coordinates, I'd draw the X, either with moveTo and lineTo commands, or by adding a Symbol checkmark (or ZapfDingbats, or another font that has similar glyphs) at an absolute position.
