Bruce,
I would highly recommend javaranch.com. The 'Big Moose Saloon' section is
where the forums are - check out the 'Java in General' forum. Try your
questions there, but take the time to read through threads first. Your
questions may have been asked and answered already.

A decent Java tutorial is available on java.sun.com (also where forums are),
at:
http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/getStarted/index.html
