Back I don't think the problem is with Excel but rather with the font that Excel is using some fonts do not map all the characters in the Unicode range. if you're using windows you can check on what your font can display using the Character Map Viewer (charmap.exe). If the font is not able to display that character it usually results in a box being displayed.
